Meeting report Mendips Raceway Monday May 30th 2016
The second day of the old Whitsun bank holiday proved to be dry and sunny again, but fans were keen to keep their jackets on as there was a keen wind at times.
A large field of drivers thronged the pits for the four formula event which featured Bangers, Juniors, Special Rods and Hot Rods.
22 Junior Rods were on hand including debutants 730 Taylor Sealy, 72 Josh Thomas, and 854 Jack Sear, and returnee 53 Angus Hawkins. Becky Pearce(66)took heats one and two, followed home by Jacob Anderson (285) and Dan Kent (376) respectively with Taylor Sealy taking an impressive 5th place in Heat one.Heat Three was won by Josh Weware(36) with Anderson again runner up, and come the Final it was all about Dan Kent, taking a clear victory over Charlie Pearce (88) and Weare.
The first three cars over the line had their restrictor plates checked and all were fine. Josh Weare thus maintains his lead in the Points, but with Charlie Ayles on holiday, Kent and Anderson have leapfrogged him.
23 Special Rods took part in the meeting in a 2/3 format as usual, and there were again new drivers-brother Sam (91) and Liam (92) Bartlett from Weymouth . Both set out their stall early with Sam winning Heat one with Liam third.
Recently downgraded veteran Les Brice (700) took a popular victory in Heat Two, and it was Rob Price (51) who took the win in the third race, with rapidly improving Tim Seaford (45) in second.
The Final was a hectic race, which has a pile up when points leader Andy Pincott (85) lost power, but Dan Latimer took the win in style from Andy Bennett(26) and Brice senior.
Hot Rods were contesting the annual Andy and Loreen Trophy in the Spring Classic, and Colin White(718) invited another guest driver for his long serving Corrado in the person of Ryan Connolly(71).
Connolly took his time in Heat One to get the hand of it, finishing 7th, but swept all before him to win Heat Two. It was Colin who won Heat One and the Final, with James Griggs(258) and Mark Shelper (788) his placemen.
Yet another big field of Bangers-51 to be precise, tool part in two heats, consolation , Final and Grand National. Jamie ‘Cookie’ Thomas (70 carried on his good form with a heat one win with Jody Jeanes (133) taking the other.
Tom Pearce(199) showed good form with a consolation win followed him by Ash Rice (938) . A very fast Final went the way of Jeanes, with Points Champion Ben Styles (83) second and Dan Rice (138) third.
Jeanes did not take up the option of a lap handicap in the Grand National, and this was again won by Pearce, although the race was cut short with a potential injury to Sarah Pearce(281) who crashed heavily on the top bend. Fortunately, she was able to exit the car with assistance, and was sore but unbowed!
A great meeting all round.
