Meeting Report September 23rd 2012
As forecast, the weather on Sunday was pretty daunting-rain all day, with just a brief interval mid afternoon when it stopped for a short while, and this naturally had a dramatic effect on the attendance of both drivers and spectators.
The Brisca f2 booking list was almost the best of the season, with 32 cars, but on the day only 24 arrived, which resulted in a 2 from 3 heat format being adopted. First up was the Rookies Reward Final, which, after many years of trying, finally went the way of our regular long distance traveller, and adopted west countryman, Phil Man (53) the teacher from Bolton, with and excellent drive on a wet track. Mike Priddle (14) was second and Ryan Wadling (476) third on his first attempt. Fourth on the road was Andrew Bennett (830) but it subsequently discovered that he was a non qualifier.
The yellow tops made the most of the conditions by winning the next two heats-Priddle the first after Mann had spun away his lead, but he made amends by winning the second one, Jamie Beere (954) took the third, after an earlier second place to Priddle, while Track Champion Chris Bradbury (886) had a terrible day, and actually left the stadium before the Grand National, having secured the Championship two meetings previously!
Come the Final, it was the other Lancastrian, Tom Adcroft(768) who came to the fore with a storming drive, followed home by Richard Beere(254), who then went out and won the Grand National, from Neil Hooper (676), his best result of the day.
National Bangers were racing for their final World Qualifying Round, and the whole day revolved around the Bugler brothers Steve ‘Boogie’ (252) and Rob ‘Roona’ (262) who won all the races between them, while Sam Trim (363) secured the Points Championship for the first time with a trio of runner up places.
At the lose of the meeting, Roona had secured his place for the World Championship at Ipswich, and Tom Davey (54) finished second to book his place as well. Roona is probably the youngest ever World Championship qualifier, at the age of 16, and is now busy preparing a car for the event which takes place on Saturday October 13th.
The Junior Rods final outing for 2012 was for the West Of England Championship, sponsored by JB Racing Engines, and although the field was smaller than last year, the race was one of the best ever, probably aided by the wet and slippery track.
Callum Richards (87) and Zoe Cambridge(273) were the top heat scorers, with Dan Steeds (796) who was top man at the August meeting really struggling all day with his Austin A40 in the difficult conditions. With the traditional fastest off the front West of England Grid, with was Richards on pole, with Cambridge, and Steeds next up, and while Richards led all the way to lap 14, when Zoe took the lead, it was Callum Richards who won the race.
Dan Steeds held third until half way, until he spun, so it was a delighted Brad Seymour (25) who took third place. Like Bradbury in the Stock Cars, Points Championship leader had a bad day, crashing out in heat two, but such was his lead that he took the trophy by default, and the inaugural JB Racing Engines Best Novice Trophy went to Joe Capel (30), and the Most Improved Driver Trophy to Sam Crane (24).
