Welcome everyone to Mendips Raceway, on this Easter Weekend – and as much a tradition of bunnies and eggs – the pits will be packed for some top notch action!
The GERRY DOMMETT MEMORIAL TROPHY The stock car boys and girls are here to play for their Easter Sunday opener and as is the tradition – the qualifying round also tops the bill. Points accrued today would lead towards the World Semis down at Taunton, before the big one at the mighty Racewall, Cowdenbeath and our booking list sees lots of travellers from north of the border headed by the Burgoyne clan, Chris (647), Steven (674) and Lewis (547). Reigning champion and Mendips Regular, Luke Wrench (1) tops the booking list along with our track champion Dan Roots (776). Roots came out on top of a stellar season finale with trading blows and knock outs! The Gerry Dommett is up for grabs, that brief visit over the skies in the late Sixties in his aeroplane, led to the very creation of this raceway.
The hard-hitting tin toppers are coming for a trip to the hills. Last year in our two meetings, saw Archie Brown (720) on his roof, then arriving at the second with the gold roof! He has started the season lively, with the start of a juicy feud with Stu Shevill (618) Points wise the track champion Brad Compton Sage (902) leads the entry along with the fabulous Darby boys – Harry (577) and Warren (677). Local interest continues in the form of the rapidly improving Joe Delahay (768) and Rich James (112)
We thank Paul May of Uncle Bod's Tyre Shack for his ongoing sponsorship of the Loons and if we get enough, there might be a 4th race!!!
A two dayer to start the seasons to the serious non contact racers. A good grid is due to be with us. Leading the entry Jason Oliver (303), who took the West of England championship for the 2nd year in a row. At the start of the month he fooled a lot of people by announcing his "retirement"! Last year's hot shot Harry Melville (226) has sold up though to focus on work. South Coast legend Scott Weldon (517) is back to play and Andrew Bressington (278) continues to turn back the clock in his BMW. 2 days of close quarters action to continue the start the season right follows.
BANGER VANS – THE RAMPLING FAMILY TROPHY The grid will see the delivery vans and trader vans driven, possibly better on track for a trash!
The Sideman Campervan – which starred in the social media superstars roadtrip video shot here last summer - will meet its maker today in the hands of (Insert name here) The usual showmen, Roona (262), Boogie (252), Mac (440) and the like will be showing folk how to make an express delivery, although usually they don't knock.
Defending World Champion Jake Bond (743) is after some points for his defence, the Harveys Liam (87) and Jason (86) will challenge the pack!
The opening meeting for the stars of the future was very much a form guide for the season ahead.
A debut win and new found confidence for Ollie Melville (26) saw a dominant victory. After Tom Dalton (229) took the consolation, the form book looks like its going to be a battle of the Bryant Brothers – Archie
(511) taking a heat and Olly (111) after banishing early gremlins to take the final.
Benji Higgins (916) looked rather rapid in practice however to end your first racing lap on your roof was an experience not on the tick sheet.
The three wheeled free wheeling stars of the raceway return to the raceway with a roll in mind.
More of the reliant Reliants have been found and are ready to rumble.
Points champion Joe Capel (30) leads the way to be best to be unstable – he'll be challenged by Tom Weeks (100) who will be eager to get his hands back on the silver roof, even if it means he has to spend a bit more time on his roof.
3 straight "races" but count those rolls! I don't think our canteen outlets will match the amount of rolls that our plastic pigs will fly!
Next time – it's the May Day Bank Holiday with a Thunderbolt or two – keep up with the socials, mendipsraceway.com Enjoy your day, Cheers n gone
