Welcome to the concluding meeting here at Mendips Raceway for the 2024 season, where a strong field of 90+ cars are all gunning for the prestigious title of ‘West of England Champion.’
All of us here at Mendips Raceway are delighted to play host to you all this evening as I am sure you will enjoy an evening of great racing, spooky costumes and a superb firework display – both on and off track!
Rookie Bangers are presenting an excellent grid of drivers, with 109 Chris Neville looking too defend his crown. Strong front runners for the title are the Staples Harrison (2) and Barry (23) who are locked in a battle at the top of the points chart, it will be exciting too see if Dad Barry can steal son Harrison’s silver roof and sneak the West of England Championship too. Another front runner is recently crowned National Bangers World Champion 743 Jake Bond, who led almost every lap in last years race. Last time out for the rookies 773 Brad Hunt, 962 Abbie Deeprose ands 198 Tom Gumbleton were race winners while 461 Dan Powell won the final. The first prestigious title of the year for the rookie bangers was the flag to flag masterclass by 154 Joe Odhams, who will also be after the blue and silver cheques.
20 Special Rods are scheduled to race for the West of England Championship, the Mark Loader Roofing Summer Series concluded in September with 278 Andy Bressington sweeping top honours. However, the silver roof race is wide open with 720 Dan Latimer heading the charts, with 700 Les Brice sat 5 points behind and son Ben sat in 3rd. A 17 point margin separates the top 3, however with the West of England Championship on the line, the stakes are raised. Reigning Champion 303 Jason Oliver after a slow start to the season has kicked into gear since the change of tyres, and will certainly be aiming to place the red 303 bumper back on top step of the podium. Last time out it was 278 Andy Bressington that took the final win spoils, but with two titles on the line, every driver will be looking to gain that extra bit to take the victory.
An enduring season comes to a head, with the young guns fighting it out for two titles also. A two horse race for the points sees leader 314 Max Barraclough, who has headed the leaderboard since the beginning of the season leads reigning West of England Champion 162 Charlie Cocks by over 20 points. With an almost unassailable lead Barraclough will just be looking to finish his races with Cocks having it all to do. These two are almost guaranteed to start on the front row of the main race, however Bryant brothers 511 Archie and 111 Olly will be looking to sneak through the battle to take the West of England crown. 511 Archie Bryant took two heats whilst 162 Charlie Cocks won the other, however a first career Final victory for 99 Jenson Harris was the story of the day the last time the juniors hit the track, with 314 Barraclough 2nd an 511 Bryant 3rd. Another tip looking to pick up the win is 620 Austin Latimer along side 429 Tristen Heathcote, who is competing in his last Junior meeting before stepping up to adult formulas.
A superb evening of racing is in store, 90 plus cars will be awaiting to take the chequered flag on Saturday evening, we cannot wait too see the fire works on and off track, and hope you all enjoy your evening. We cannot wait to see you again next year!
