Another bank holiday weekend of fun and frolics awaits at Mendips, as Sunday the Thunderbolt for the Unlimited Bangers takes centre stage, along with the Juniors and Specials, whilst on Monday, Hot Rods and F2’s join the Robins and Rookies.
The Thunderbolt is one of our bigger meetings for the Unlimited Bangers and now, in its 17th running has developed into a must do event for banger nuts everywhere. Johnnie James (362) is the defending champion, and will have a lot to do. This is a meeting for the rare and smart looking tin goes out and gets trashed. With it being to Old Skool rules the destruction builds as the meeting progresses.
The Sierra based formula has another run out after the impressive showing last time out. Mark Loader (444) took a win, and another win for Russell Colenut (426) in the final, but the one to watch could be Dale Brace (612) who took a brace of wins last time out.
Meeting 2 for the Junior Rods and expect new grades for the youngsters as early season form is rewarded with a new roof colour. Last time out on Easter Monday, the wins were more eventually distributed, and it was very much a battle of the sexes as scores were tied between girls and boys at 2 wins each. With a heat win for Millie Ruby (111), and for Josh Weare (36) and Jake Devine (11), the final went the way of the ladies with Leah Bennett (26) taking the win. Expect more of the same as the youngsters battle for supremacy on the Mendips tarmac.

If the opening meeting was anything to go by, we are in for a cracking season. Plenty of visitors, and with many regulars waylaid by problems or prior commitments, the numbers look good for another cracker of a meeting. Last time out, it came right down to the last corner as Mendips Maestro, Nathan Maidment (935) could not hold off a last bend attack from Midlander Adam Rubery (700). The likes of Rubery, Shoot Out Champion Luke Wrench (560), and the returning Chris Bradbury have said that they would be aiming to be regular here this season. It also marks the first day of the new grading period, with a significant drop to blue for Justin Fisher (315) who will be looking to return to red at the first opportunity. It also marks the return from injury from Steve Gilbert (542). Football eh, a mug’s game!
The wibbly wobbly brigade of the Robin racers are back for their usual Bank Holiday burn out. Last time out, the first race went the way of points champion Tim Weare (304), whilst in the others was the Gillinghams, George (24) and Russ (26) who took the second heat and the feature final. Today will see the first of the classics on 3 wheels! Their day concludes with one of the funniest races of the year. Take the robins, add a caravan, park a few dangerously on the track to drive through and wallop. Guaranteed recipe for intentional disaster – and now there will be a few less caravans on the M5! Bonus!
The highly tuned racing dudes are back for another play for the Andy & Loreen Spring Classic. Last time this season, it has been all James Griggs (258) with a dominant showing. However, back in March it was Colin White (718) who took all to the sword. Should both be present, it should be a cracker. But you certainly can’t discount Steve Hunt (282) who broke the top two’s stranglehold. Some good racing to be had and no inch will be given lightly!
The nudge and spin merchants of crash are back for their second showing of the season, and in the last meeting we had a different winner in each race. Dan Rice (138) won a heat, Aaron Charles to the consolation, but a win from Jason Moore (739) along with following Adam Marshall (677) home in the final, he is certainly one to watch.
Things should be a lot less brutal today, after the second heat turned into a DD before it even started – not really nudge and spin!
